Jill Biden’s attempt to explain her husband’s disastrous 2024 debate performance is generating a backlash from an unexpected source: former Biden administration officials and campaign aides who say her latest account simply doesn’t match what they witnessed.
In recent interviews promoting her upcoming memoir, Jill Biden claimed she was stunned by Joe Biden’s performance during the CNN debate against then-candidate Donald Trump. She told CBS News that she feared her husband might have been suffering a stroke or some other medical emergency. According to excerpts reported by The Atlantic, she even considered the possibility that he had been drugged.
The problem, according to critics inside Biden’s own orbit, is that her actions immediately afterward appear inconsistent with that explanation.
Axios reporter Alex Thompson, who co-authored Original Sin, a book examining questions surrounding Biden’s mental and physical condition, said he has heard intense frustration from former Biden aides since Jill Biden’s comments became public.
“A lot of Democrats, including several Biden aides that I’ve talked to since yesterday when this interview came out, just simply don’t believe her,” Thompson told CNN.
The skepticism stems largely from what happened after the debate. Rather than treating the performance as a potential medical emergency, the Bidens proceeded to a campaign event where Jill Biden enthusiastically praised her husband before supporters. The following day, the campaign continued with scheduled appearances and public events.
“And a lot of former Biden aides have told me if you really believed he might be having a stroke, that it’s not necessarily the same behavior that you would do,” Thompson said. “There’s no evidence that there was any significant medical exam afterward.”
That contradiction is becoming difficult for some former Biden allies to ignore.
Thompson noted that Jill Biden’s current account also conflicts with reporting showing that concerns about the president’s condition existed well before the debate. According to his reporting, aides had witnessed episodes similar to the debate performance months earlier. He also pointed to Biden’s interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur, during which memory lapses became a major topic of discussion.
Yet throughout that period, members of Biden’s inner circle repeatedly insisted that the president was functioning normally and that concerns about his condition were exaggerated.
“They just feel that the inner circle gaslit them,” Thompson said.
Perhaps most revealing was Thompson’s description of the reaction he has received from former Biden officials over the last day.
“I’ve been surprised by the level of anger and frustration that I’ve heard from former Biden aides towards the former first lady in the last 24 hours,” he said.
He also revealed that one former Biden official responded to Jill Biden’s account with a blunt assessment: “She’s lying.”
Whether that accusation is fair is ultimately a matter of interpretation. What is clear, however, is that Jill Biden’s effort to reshape the narrative surrounding the debate has reopened old wounds inside the Democratic Party. Instead of quieting questions about what the president’s inner circle knew regarding his condition, the memoir tour is prompting former aides to speak more openly about concerns they say existed long before the debate stage exposed them to the entire country.
