Al Green Files Another Resolution

Representative Al Green (D-TX) on Tuesday introduced yet another resolution to impeach President Donald Trump—this time over the president’s decision to order military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities without prior congressional approval. But the effort quickly failed, with the House voting 344-79 to table the resolution within hours.

Green accused Trump of violating the Constitution’s War Powers Clause by authorizing the June 21 strike on three Iranian enrichment facilities without properly consulting Congress. “I take no delight in what I’m doing,” Green said from the House floor. “I do this because I love my country… I do it because this authoritarian president that we currently have will continue to assume power if not challenged.”

However, the factual basis of Green’s resolution was immediately undercut. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed Tuesday that President Trump had informed key Democratic leaders before the operation. Trump reportedly spoke with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and attempted to reach House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) before ordering the precision strikes.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) defended the president, posting on X: “Leaders in Congress were aware of the urgency of this situation, and the Commander-in-Chief evaluated that the imminent danger outweighed the time it would take for Congress to act.”

The motion to table the resolution passed with broad bipartisan support: all 216 House Republicans voted in favor of shelving the effort, along with 128 Democrats. Only 79 Democrats, including progressive members such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN), opposed the motion.

Trump responded on Truth Social by taunting the left-wing lawmakers: “Stupid AOC and Ilhan Omar want to impeach me again. GO AHEAD — MAKE MY DAY!”

The National Republican Congressional Committee criticized Democrats who supported the resolution. In a statement, the NRCC said, “128 Democrats just hid their beliefs and voted to table impeachment, clearly too scared to be honest and too weak to lead… If Democrats retake the Majority in 2026, they’ll go right back to wasting time on political revenge.”

This marks Green’s second impeachment attempt since Trump began his second term, and his sixth overall dating back to Trump’s first term. Previous resolutions from Green have cited issues ranging from “transphobia” to “bigotry,” though none have succeeded. Green has gained a reputation for launching solo impeachment pushes even without support from Democratic leadership.

The Texas congressman was most recently censured in March after interrupting Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress. That incident prompted a rare moment of floor protest, as dozens of Democrats stood and sang “We Shall Overcome” in defiance of the censure vote.
