It’s been a massive box office surprise for a little known movie to unseat a high-profile Hollywood blockbuster. Movie fans are in awe that Sound of Freedom, with its much lower budget, has managed to outperform the final Indiana Jones movie, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
What’s even more ironic is that Disney shelved the movie when they acquired Century Fox in 2019 (Fox was preparing to release the movie).
The surprisingly high success of Sound of Freedom is just proof that real-life stories can resonate with audiences, especially when they’re grounded in truth.
Sound of Freedom, which is co-written and directed by Alejandro Monteverde, is based on the real-life story of Tim Ballard, the founder of the anti-sex trafficking charity Operation Underground Railroad.

Ballard is credited with leading hundreds of brave missions rescuing children from human traffickers and cartels in Latin American countries. His team’s work has been featured in a popular Netflix series, but now it has a major Hollywood movie to showcase its incredible heroism and impact.
The action movie starring Jim Caviezel is based on the true story of former federal agent Tim Ballard who worked to save children from human trafficking. On its first day, the film grossed over $14 million.
The film beat Disney’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” which played in nearly 2,000 more theaters and took in $11 million and the second-place slot on July 4.
It’s remarkable that a film with such a small budget was able to compete with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, a movie with nearly a $300 million budget. But fans of Sound of Freedom are more than happy to be making their voices heard at the box office.
Their support for the movie could mean even more to other filmmakers and producers. It could be just the encouragement they need to keep backing real-life stories that Hollywood normally overlooks. There are still countless stories of heroes and unsung heroes out there in the world, waiting to be told, and the box office success of Sound of Freedom is a testament to that.
This is devastating to Disney who was hoping that their Jones film might save them from misery. Since acquiring several massive licenses like Marvel and Indiana Jones Disney has run them into the ground.
The latest Star Wars movies (mainly the last two) were awful, their streaming network is falling apart with dumb series like She-Hulk, and Pixar’s latest woke film was a complete flop.
One of the largest, most popular action movie characters was almost dethroned by a low-budget film that Disney cut in 2019.
There’s some karma for you.
