Court Room Chaos, Judge Attacked, Two Injured

A Clark County, Nevada judge and marshal were both injured recently when a man who was denied bond threw himself over the bench and attacked the judge.

As Judge Mary Kay Holthus was sentencing Deobra Redden, who was charged with attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. In the video Redden’s attorney requests that the judge give the defendant probation.

“I think it’s time he got a taste of something else,” Judge Holthus responded.

Then Redden charges the judge, leaps over the bench, and begins to attack the judge.

Judge Holthus was injured but did not go to the hospital. A marshal was also injured and was hospitalized but is in stable condition.

“We commend the heroic acts of her staff, law enforcement, and all others who subdued the defendant,” the court said in a statement provided to the station. “The court remains committed to a safe and secure courthouse and courtrooms. We are reviewing all our protocols and will do whatever is necessary to protect the judiciary, the public and our employees.”

Now, Redden will be back in court on Thursday, having been charged with single counts of battery on a protected person resulting in substantial harm and battery, plus two counts of battery on a protected person.
In the full video, Redden punches a court staffer after he attacks the judge. Court staff repeatedly punch back, trying to get control of Redden. There was a lot of chaos in the courtroom as someone was heard saying, “Don’t do this,” and another said, “Radio somebody.”

In the footage, he can be heard repeatedly punching Holthus and screaming at her using explicit language. Meanwhile, security officers attempted to restrain the crazed criminal.

The female judge can be heard pleading with the criminal and begging him to get off her.
