A group of Republican state senators in Minnesota has introduced a bill that would officially classify Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) as a mental illness under state law.
The proposal, which seeks to amend Sections 245.462 and 245I.02 of the Minnesota Statutes, aims to recognize TDS as a legitimate psychological condition affecting individuals who display extreme and irrational hostility toward President Donald Trump.
The term “Trump Derangement Syndrome” has been widely used by conservatives to describe an obsessive hatred of Trump that defies logic, often leading sufferers to reject or distort reality.
Those afflicted with TDS exhibit an inability to acknowledge any positive aspects of Trump’s policies, frequently using extreme language such as “dictator” or “Nazi” to describe a democratically elected president. The condition has been observed in media figures, Hollywood elites, and left-wing activists, with notable cases including The View hosts, several CNN and MSNBC personalities, and actor-turned-political activist Rob Reiner.
The Minnesota bill defines TDS as an “acute onset of paranoia” triggered by Trump or his policies. Symptoms include verbal hostility, aggressive behavior toward Trump or his supporters, and an inability to function in everyday life due to the mere presence of Trump-related topics.
The legislation also expands the state’s definition of mental illness for case management and community support services, incorporating TDS within the framework of recognized mental health conditions.
While the bill is unlikely to pass given Minnesota’s political landscape—where Democrats control the Senate and governor’s office, and the House is evenly split—its introduction has drawn attention.
The Trump War Room social media account responded by jokingly suggesting that the bill could benefit Minnesota’s own Governor Tim Walz, posting an image of him with exaggerated facial expressions, labeling it as a case of “TDS eyes.”
President Trump himself has often commented on the widespread nature of Trump Derangement Syndrome. Speaking with Moms for Liberty founder Tiffany Justice last year, he described TDS as a “horrible, horrible terminal disease” that “destroys the mind before it destroys the body.”
