Oklahoma Will Require Test For Certain Teacher Applicants Says Report

In a bold and controversial move that’s already stirring debate across the country, Oklahoma is drawing a very distinct line in the sand — one that now runs straight through the world of public education.

According to a CNN report released Friday, teachers arriving from left-leaning states like California and New York are being required to pass a civics-based certification exam before being allowed to step foot in an Oklahoma classroom.

The initiative, spearheaded by State Superintendent Ryan Walters, represents a new chapter in the ongoing clash between progressive educational standards and the growing backlash against what critics call “woke” indoctrination. Walters, known for his unapologetically conservative stances, told Fox News Digital that the test is part of a broader effort to align educators with Oklahoma’s values — a curriculum rooted in traditional civics, constitutional literacy, and biological clarity.

The exam itself is relatively straightforward in its construction: 50 multiple-choice questions, according to CNN. But its purpose is anything but casual. Sample questions reportedly included topics such as which chromosome pairs determine biological sex, the purpose of religious liberty in America, and the identification of the three branches of government. Others checked for foundational knowledge — like naming the two chambers of Congress or identifying how many U.S. Senators there are.

But the content of the test may be less provocative than its origin. Walters partnered with conservative media and education group PragerU — an organization frequently targeted by progressive critics — to develop the exam. Branded as an “America First” certification, the test is designed to ensure that new hires from blue states don’t bring what Walters describes as “indoctrinating social justice” ideologies into Oklahoma classrooms.

“If you’re coming from a state like California or New York, where the standards have shifted radically away from traditional American values, we’re going to make sure those standards don’t follow you here,” Walters said. He singled out California Governor Gavin Newsom’s gender education mandates as part of the problem, noting that Oklahoma has no interest in teaching children “about all sexual orientations” or “exploring gender identity” in the classroom.

The test isn’t public yet, but according to PragerU, it will be soon. And any teacher who fails it? They won’t be certified to teach in Oklahoma’s public schools for that year.

This isn’t just a policy shift — it’s a declaration. Walters made it clear that this is about more than test scores. It’s about trust, cultural alignment, and drawing boundaries between two drastically different visions for what education should be.

In Walters’ words: “We’re not going to let social justice warriors from Maine or California rewrite Oklahoma’s values. Every county in this state voted for President Trump. That matters.”
