Steve Martin has found himself in the news after he decided to turn down a role some of his fans asked him to play.
Martin’s name was thrown in the ring for the impersonation gig after Harris announced Minnesota’s Governor as her running mate. Martin found himself discussing the potential role with “SNL” producer, Lorne Michaels, as stated in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. Martin disclosed that both he and Michaels agreed he wasn’t the right fit for the role.
“I wanted to say no and, by the way, he wanted me to say no,” Martin said. His explanation? “I’m not an impressionist.” Martin felt he was primarily considered for the role due to his similar appearance to Walz, rocking grey hair and glasses.
Additionally, portraying Walz on “SNL” would require an “ongoing” commitment, which isn’t compatible with Martin’s current schedule. He emphasized, “Again, they need a real impressionist to do that. They’re going to find somebody really, really good. I’d be struggling.”
The speculation around Martin’s potential portrayal of Walz was initially sparked after a post Martin made on social media following the announcement of Walz as Harris’ running mate. “I just learned that Tim Walz wants to go on the road with Marty Short,” he wrote, referring to his ‘Only Murders in the Building’ co-star, Martin Short.
Folks, I’m sure Martin created a schedule conflict because he’s not stupid. He is loved by one and all and why mess that up jumping into politics.
He makes one false move and the left would tarnish him.
Despite the fans’ hopes to see Martin play Walz on “SNL,” it appears he won’t be taking on the role. The popular user’s post, “SNL, get Steve Martin on the phone NOW,” seems to be a sentiment that won’t be fulfilled.
In other “SNL” news, Maya Rudolph is set to return to the show for its 50th season, reprising her role as Kamala Harris. Rudolph first took on the role in 2019 when Harris was campaigning for the Democratic nomination for president. In 2020, Harris even spoke with Rudolph about her experience portraying her on the comedy show.
Rudolph isn’t one to play it safe but that was back in 2019. Oprah can’t stand her after because of Rudolph’s impersonation of her.
