The Biden administration has revived a Trump-era immigration rule just a day before Title 42 is set to expire, and has sparked concerns that it may lead to an increase in illegal immigration into the United States. The rule, which was published in the Federal Register on Wednesday, disqualifies migrants from applying for asylum in the US if they failed to first apply for asylum in other countries that they traveled through, such as Mexico.
The reversal of President Joe Biden’s campaign promises comes at a time when the administration has struggled for more than two years to control historic levels of illegal immigration into the US. The ongoing crisis at the southern border is widely expected to worsen when Title 42, a health order that authorizes border officials to immediately expel migrants without processing, is repealed at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday.
This latest move by the Biden administration is a clear departure from its earlier stance on immigration policies. During the 2020 presidential campaign, Biden was one of the most vocal critics of former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, and even used them as a club to garner support from the electorate.
The left is fuming about because they know that Biden caved.
“This is the first president in the history of the United States of America that says anybody seeking asylum has to do it in another country.”
