Tim Kaine Justifies Support For Jones Following Text Message Revelations

There’s political spin — and then there’s whatever it is Senator Tim Kaine was doing on Meet the Press this Sunday.

Faced with a Democratic nominee for attorney general in his home state of Virginia who literally fantasized about the death of a Republican official’s child as a form of political persuasion, Kaine managed to look the American people in the eye — through a camera lens — and claim, with a straight face, that he wouldn’t call for a Republican to drop out over similar behavior.

Sure, Tim. Pull the other one. It plays “Hail to the Chief.”

Let’s be crystal clear about what Jay Jones — the Democratic candidate for attorney general — actually said in his unearthed texts. This wasn’t a bad joke or clumsy sarcasm. This was raw, malicious, and deeply disturbing: fantasizing about House Speaker Todd Gilbert watching one of his young children die so he might reconsider his views. If there’s a line in politics — or basic decency — Jones leapt over it, lit it on fire, and then posted a selfie.

And what does Tim Kaine do? He shrugs. He insists, “I’ve known Jay for 25 years.” That’s not a defense. That’s a confession — a confession that loyalty to the machine outweighs moral judgment. (Also, worth noting: Jones is 36. So Kaine’s known him since he was 11? Was he pre-screening potential future AGs at recess?)

Kaine’s best effort at moral equivalency? A line from then-Lieutenant Governor Winsome Sears three years ago in which she described abortion as “murder” — a philosophical statement consistent with her long-held pro-life views — and suggested that its supporters would someday have to reckon with their choices. There was no death wish. No talk of children dying. No violent fantasy. But to Kaine, that’s the same as explicitly texting about watching someone’s child get shot.

This isn’t just a bad take — it’s a disgraceful dodge. And it tells you everything you need to know about where the modern Democratic Party is.

When their own side says the quiet part out loud — and that quiet part involves the imagined death of a child — they don’t pull the plug on the campaign. They don’t rescind endorsements. They don’t demand accountability. They issue mealy-mouthed condemnations and then pivot to Trump.

And how did Jones handle the fallout? In a word: badly. Even Democrats were wincing through his “apology” during the debate with Jason Miyares. It was robotic. Flat. Calculated. He fumbled, then defaulted to a generic anti-Trump tirade that had nothing to do with the actual moral rot at the center of his own scandal. You don’t get to excuse advocating political violence by blaming the nearest Republican.

Michael LaRosa — Jill Biden’s own former spokesman — called the debate performance a “disaster.” When even your own team is whispering, “Yikes,” you’re not just in damage control. You’re drowning.
