President Donald Trump used a prime-time moment during Tuesday’s State of the Union address to spotlight what he called a major breakthrough in lowering prescription drug prices — and to introduce the first customer of his administration’s new TrumpRx platform.
“Other presidents tried to do it, but they never could,” Trump said, referring to efforts to rein in soaring pharmaceutical costs. “But I got it done.”
At the center of the president’s remarks was his “most favored nation” policy, an initiative designed to align U.S. drug prices with those paid in other major Western countries. The policy aims to prevent Americans from paying significantly more than consumers abroad for the same medications. Trump urged Congress to codify the policy into law, seeking to lock in the changes beyond executive authority.
Trump also highlighted TrumpRx, a website his administration says connects Americans to steeply discounted medications offered by participating drug companies, including Pfizer. According to the president, the platform provides drugs at discounts of “600% and more,” though he did not provide detailed pricing comparisons during the speech.
“Americans who for decades paid by far the highest prices of any nation, anywhere in the world, for prescription drugs, will now pay the lowest price anywhere in the world,” Trump asserted. “That’s a big achievement.”
To put emphasis on the impact, Trump invited Catherine Rayner, a military spouse, to attend the address. He described her as the first TrumpRx customer and shared her experience with infertility treatments.
“She and her husband have struggled with infertility, and they turned to IVF,” Trump said. “One drug has been costing Catherine $4,000 to purchase, but a few weeks ago, she logged on to the TrumpRx website and got that same drug that cost $4,000, got it for under $500.”
The president paused to address her directly: “Katherine, we are all praying for you and you’re going to be a great mom.”
The moment blended policy and personal narrative, a strategy often used in State of the Union addresses to humanize broader legislative initiatives. By pairing a sweeping claim about international drug price parity with an individual success story, Trump framed his prescription drug efforts as both structural reform and immediate relief for families.
