In what may be the most entertaining—and unintentionally revealing—moment of the 2024 election season so far, a young boy became a viral sensation when a CNN reporter asked him a simple question: “What’s the first word that pops into your head when you hear ‘Kamala Harris’?” The boy’s immediate response? “Liar!”
Well, you can’t say the kid doesn’t know his stuff.
This hilarious exchange was part of CNN’s larger project to get insights from America’s youth on the current political climate. Apparently, the network thought it would be enlightening to hear from 10-year-olds about Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. While the goal was to gather perspectives from children across different political regions, they probably weren’t expecting this particular nugget of truth.
The project gathered responses from 80 elementary school students in Arizona, New Jersey, and Texas—three states that represent different ends of the political spectrum. The answers CNN received were a mix of predictable, amusing, and, at times, eye-opening. Unsurprisingly, the kids’ views often mirrored their parents’ political leanings. But let’s be honest: When a 10-year-old hits the nail on the head by calling Harris a liar, it’s hard not to laugh at how even the youngest among us seem to see through the smoke and mirrors of this administration.
Of course, CNN’s report went into more detail, focusing on how political biases are passed down from parents to children. In blue states like New Jersey, most of the kids were predictably fawning over Harris and critical of Trump, while the kids in Texas had a slightly different take. Let’s just say that Harris didn’t come out looking like the next great hope for America. One boy from Texas dropped the “L” word, and let’s face it, that probably echoes what a lot of parents in conservative households are thinking.

On the other hand, when it came to Trump, the responses were just as varied. In more left-leaning areas, Trump was described in terms like “pure evil,” because apparently, comparing him to fictional villains or historical tyrants has become a pastime for liberals. Meanwhile, in more conservative areas, kids were shouting “Go America!” when his name was mentioned, showing that not everyone is buying into the left’s fearmongering.
The study, co-conducted by Arizona State University and Stanford, attempted to understand how children’s political opinions are shaped by their environment. And guess what? The results were about as predictable as you’d think. The kids in liberal households had been spoon-fed extreme negative opinions about Trump, with some even going as far as comparing him to Adolf Hitler—because that’s a reasonable leap for a 10-year-old, right? Meanwhile, Republican-leaning kids gave more thoughtful answers, recognizing Trump’s flaws but choosing to focus on his accomplishments and policies, which, frankly, is more nuanced than what you get from most of the mainstream media these days.
But let’s go back to the boy who called Harris a liar. Out of the mouths of babes, right? While Democrats like to push Harris as some sort of trailblazing leader, even kids can see through her political double-speak. Sure, CNN might have hoped for a heartwarming moment of unity from these kids, but instead, they got an unfiltered dose of reality. And it’s refreshing.

A CNN study of 10 and 11 year-olds found that blue state kids held more polarized and extreme views than red state kids.

As the 2024 election gears up, this little viral moment offers a glimpse into how the next generation views our current leaders. If the past few years are any indication, there’s a good chance they’ll grow up with a healthy dose of skepticism toward the politicians the mainstream media tries so hard to prop up. Whether it’s calling out Harris or shouting “Go America!” for Trump, it’s clear that even the youngest Americans are paying attention.
