DeSantis Declines Phone Call From Kamala

Here we go again. Hurricane Milton is barreling toward Florida’s west coast, packing a serious punch as a Category 4 monster. It’s got winds that’ll make you want to hold onto your hat—155 mph, in case you were wondering. With the central pressure dropping like a rock, it’s shaping up to be one of those “remember when” storms that Floridians will talk about for years. But amidst the chaos, guess who’s trying to step into the spotlight now? Yep, Kamala Harris.

Now, let’s rewind for a second. Remember what Kamala was doing during Hurricane Helene? When that storm was threatening Florida, Kamala was off doing what she does best: raising funds for her party. You know, shaking hands with Hollywood’s elite, making speeches—anything but actually dealing with the crisis at hand. But suddenly, here comes Hurricane Milton, and she’s out here trying to play Commander-in-Chief, calling Governor Ron DeSantis like she’s got a new title. It’s almost like she thinks she’s President or something.

But DeSantis? Well, he wasn’t exactly rolling out the red carpet for the ‘supposed’ phone call. It was reported that DeSantis said no to the phone call. However, it appears now that Kamala did in fact lie and make it seem that she called DeSantis specifically- which she did not.  DeSantis has been managing Florida’s hurricane season for years. He’s already gotten 51 out of 67 counties under a State of Emergency and has already received the requested help from the government. Florida is as prepped and ready as it can be before the winds even hit. This is a governor who knows what he’s doing, and he’s not waiting around for some D.C. photo op to show up before taking action.

Meanwhile, the White House approved Florida’s pre-landfall emergency declaration, which is all good, but you have to wonder—why is there such a sudden urgency now? Sure, Milton is a Category 4 storm, expected to potentially reach Category 5, and it’s got Florida on edge. But where was that energy during Helene, when Floridians needed it just as much? Instead, the administration seemed content to let state officials bear the brunt of the storm response while they focused on other priorities. The optics here aren’t exactly stellar, even if the messaging might sound better on cable news.

And it’s not like DeSantis doesn’t know the drill. He’s been all over this, urging residents in vulnerable areas to evacuate and making sure FEMA is ready to deploy aid where it’s needed. Storm surge forecasts are serious business—15 feet in Tampa Bay if Milton’s peak surge hits at high tide. For those who need a reminder, that’s nearly double what we saw during Helene. That’s why state and local officials are pounding the table, telling people to get out while they still can.

But this sudden burst of federal interest, well, it has a way of raising eyebrows. You see, DeSantis has built his reputation on being a strong leader, someone who doesn’t shy away from taking the reins in a crisis. And as he’s managing this hurricane, the last thing he needs is Washington trying to sweep in at the eleventh hour to act like they’re saving the day. It’s not about denying federal aid—it’s about who’s steering the ship, and right now, Floridians trust their own captain.

So, here’s the bottom line: Hurricane Milton is a beast, no doubt about it. It’s the strongest Atlantic hurricane since Dorian in 2019, and Floridians are staring down a life-threatening storm surge and winds that can rip roofs off houses. But it’s a little rich for Kamala Harris to swoop in when she was otherwise occupied during Helene suddenly. DeSantis knows how to lead his state through these storms, and he doesn’t need a lesson in crisis management from someone who was MIA when Florida needed it before.

Let’s hope Floridians stay safe, and let’s also hope this time, federal support stays in the lane it belongs—behind the states that are doing the real heavy lifting.

Here’s the Biden-Kamala administration not being political…note the sarcasm.
