Democrats Begin Hiring Investigators Days After Election Victory

One day after the election, Democrats are already hiring lawyers and investigators. Less than 24 hours following the vote, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee announced three open positions. They need counsel and investigators for the incoming chairman. One spot is for “counsel, anti-corruption” to craft new laws. The posting says this role will help with investigations. It is a fast start for the new majority.

Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) joked about the paper needed for these requests. “They are going to need to plant new forests for all of the subpoenas we’ll be printing,” Markey posted on X. Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) told President Trump to “LAWYER UP” on election night. Garcia is set to lead the House oversight committee. His priorities include looking at Trump family corruption and immigration enforcement. He also wants to check on the Justice Department and the Epstein files.

A Democratic strategist told the Washington Examiner that voters want a check on corruption. “They know voters are demanding a check on record-level corruption that’s costing them their money and their safety, and they take that mandate very seriously,” the strategist said. The party plans to follow evidence of wrongdoing without targeting viewpoints. According to them, they intend to prevent the administration from misusing authority to target its critics.

Minnesota Senator-elect Peggy Flanagan called for a change in Senate leadership on Wednesday. She wants Democrats to replace Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. Flanagan said, “I am tremendously grateful for Chuck Schumer’s leadership,” but she wants a new direction. “One of the things that we heard last night, resoundingly across the country, is that we are in … a new movement in this country,” Flanagan said. She pointed to candidates who refused corporate PAC money. She did not name a replacement for Schumer yet.

Two other incoming Democrats, Abdulrahman El-Sayed and Juliana Stratton, also oppose Schumer. The Wall Street Journal reported their stance. Schumer faces a leadership vote in December. If he keeps the job, he becomes majority leader again. Flanagan won her race by 10.15 percentage points. She received 1,520,865 votes to Tafoya’s 1,233,464. All 4,105 precincts reported these unofficial results.

Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH) will likely take the gavel for the Homeland Security Committee. Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) is retiring after his term ends in January. Hassan says the new majorities must focus on accountability. “The new majorities in Congress must focus on affordability and accountability for the American people,” Hassan said. She plans to use every tool to rein in the President and expose corruption. The committee has broad power to look at waste and fraud. Rand Paul (R-KY) currently leads the panel.

Jeffries says not a single member has talked to him about impeachment. Hassan says they will investigate policies hurting taxpayers. The Senate committee is looking for an adviser on AI security too. Scrutiny of technology will be a key concern soon. Democrats have the power to issue subpoenas starting in January. The job postings emphasize “sound political judgment” for oversight roles. They want staff with real investigative experience. The clock is ticking on the new Congress.
