Oh, Doug Emhoff. There he goes again, doing damage control for the most underwhelming vice president in recent memory.
In an interview that was less “hard-hitting journalism” and more like a cozy brunch chat on ABC’s Good Morning America, Emhoff stepped up to the plate to defend his wife, Vice President Kamala Harris, against mounting criticism. And his defense? Well, he thinks it’s just “unfair” for people to hold her accountable for her performance because—wait for it—she’s not the president. Seriously?
Let’s break this down. Strahan, in the softball question of the century, asked Emhoff if it’s fair for people to criticize Harris for the failings of this administration despite her involvement in some of the administration’s most notorious disasters. You know, like being appointed as the border czar (how’s that working out?), boasting about her role in the disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal, and being the tiebreaker for the American Rescue Plan—the same plan that ignited our inflation nightmare.
Emhoff, with the utmost seriousness, responded that since Harris is only the vice president, she shouldn’t bear any of the blame. He actually said, “The vice president is there as part of the administration, not leading the administration.” Right, because a vice president’s decisions and influence apparently don’t matter until they’re sitting in the Oval Office. Let’s just forget that Kamala has bragged about being “the last person in the room” when major decisions were made and signed off on. Oh, and let’s conveniently ignore the fact that she’s been assigned some of the administration’s most critical tasks, like handling the border crisis (which is now worse than ever) and helping to pass a bill that led to record inflation.
Doug seems to want us all to give his wife a free pass for the last three and a half years, claiming that if she were president, then she could show us what she’s really made of. But the reality is, Kamala Harris is already the second most powerful person in the country—arguably the most powerful, considering Biden’s well-documented cognitive “challenges.” She’s not just a passive observer. She’s been actively involved in decision-making, especially when it comes to some of the most disastrous policies we’ve seen in recent years. And that’s exactly why the Trump campaign wasted no time firing back, sarcastically dubbing Emhoff the “Second Gentleperson” on X (formerly Twitter). Their response? Simple: Kamala can’t just disown the failures of this administration when she’s been in the thick of it.
“Second Gentleperson ‘Doug’: Kamala bears no responsibility for the Biden-Harris failures because she’s only the second most powerful person in the country, not the first,” the Trump campaign posted on X.
Let’s not forget, Biden himself has admitted how much Harris contributes to his administration. It’s not like she’s been hiding in the shadows, waiting for her turn. This is the same Kamala Harris who proudly claims she had a major hand in the Afghanistan withdrawal debacle, which left 13 U.S. service members dead and American credibility in shambles. And, of course, she was the tiebreaker vote for the American Rescue Plan, the $1.9 trillion spending spree that lit the match on the inflation crisis. But, apparently, none of this counts because, as Doug says, she’s not the president.
“Joe Biden himself has admitted that Kamala plays an enormous role in his failed administration,” the campaign said. “Kamala brags about being ‘the last person in the room’ on the disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal decision. She absolutely owns every failure of the Biden-Harris administration,” the campaign continued.
The sheer audacity of this defense is mind-boggling. It’s as if they expect the American people to just overlook Kamala’s extensive involvement in the administration’s failings because, hey, she’s technically second-in-command. Sorry, Doug, but that excuse doesn’t fly. The vice president is supposed to be the right-hand person to the president. They’re not there to be a bystander—they’re there to play a critical role. Harris isn’t just a ceremonial figure who cuts ribbons and attends luncheons. She’s been making decisions that affect the lives of millions of Americans, and those decisions have been bad—really bad.
Here’s the thing: If Kamala wants credit for being the “last person in the room” when decisions are made, then she also has to own the consequences of those decisions. You can’t have it both ways. You can’t boast about your influence one minute and then shrug off responsibility when everything falls apart. This administration has been a complete train wreck, and Harris is right there in the engineer’s seat, whether Doug wants to admit it or not.

So, no, Doug, the criticism isn’t unfair—it’s long overdue. If Kamala Harris has any aspirations of one day sitting in the Oval Office, she will have to answer for her role in this administration’s failures. And if she can’t handle the heat as vice president, she sure as heck won’t be able to handle the pressure of being president. Let’s stop pretending she’s some innocent bystander and start holding her accountable for the mess she’s helped create.
