Rep. Ilhan Omar sent a direct message to Abdul El-Sayed on Wednesday morning. She celebrated his win in the Michigan Senate race with a specific Arabic phrase. This shift from “God willing” to “praise be to God” marked a clear victory for the new senator.
El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers in Tuesday’s election. The Associated Press called the race at 2:27 a.m. ET on Wednesday. By 5:23 p.m., El-Sayed held 52.5 percent of the vote to Rogers’ 45.5 percent. This result keeps the seat in Democratic hands in a state President Donald Trump won in 2024. Omar noted that this win brings the total number of Muslim members in Congress to eight.

Omar did not stop at congratulations. She addressed those who doubted her and her allies. “They told us we couldn’t speak up, couldn’t challenge the status quo, and couldn’t make it this far. But we did,” she wrote. The post ended with a repeated declaration of praise.
This celebration mirrors her own victory speech in Minnesota. She addressed supporters in Somali and danced on stage. RedState reported she called President Trump a “bigot” during her remarks. Omar claimed Democratic victories delivered a message to the White House.

The win drew attention from outside the United States. Abdel Mawgoud al-Dardiri, a former spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, praised the result. Breitbart reported he called the election a model for Muslims advancing their cause “from within the political system.” A pro-Israel commentator noted al-Dardiri described the win as a victory for the “Islamic world.”
Al-Dardiri, who now works as a professor in Minnesota, donated $500 to El-Sayed’s campaign in June. Federal records list him as Abdul Mawgoud Dardery. According to reports, El-Sayed obtained over $25,000 from no fewer than six individuals supporting the former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi. El-Sayed signed that same letter as a medical student, though he has denied any connection to the Brotherhood.
His opponent, Rogers, claimed during the race that El-Sayed pledged support to the group. President Donald Trump amplified this charge by calling El-Sayed a “jihadist Muslim Brotherhood member.” Bridge Michigan found no evidence of these ties, and El-Sayed reported he did not sign the 2012 letter.

El-Sayed will succeed retiring Sen. Gary Peters in the Senate. He defeated Rep. Haley Stevens faced the August Democratic primary contest while receiving support from Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Advocating for a state-managed health insurance program, he characterized Israel’s conduct in Gaza as genocide.
Some observers view the victory speech as a sign of tribal loyalty rather than broad consensus. Kyle Becker, writing for RedState, observed that El-Sayed’s decisive victories in areas such as Dearborn demonstrated how concentrated voting blocks produce outcomes.
