Biden Gives Comments During Washington Event On The Economy

President Joe Biden was at a Washington fundraiser to kick of Asian American, native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (who knew 🤷‍♂️).

Biden was discussing the economy when he spoke about the struggles a US ally, Japan is having.

The President said that the US economy is doing amazing because “we welcome immigrants.”

“Think about it,” he said. “Why is China stalling so bad economically? Why is Japan having trouble? Why is Russia?”

“Because they’re xenophobic,” he said. “They don’t want immigrants.”

Japan is a longtime US ally and the President just hosted the Prime Minister in April.

From NBC News:

Japan is a longtime U.S. ally in the Asia-Pacific, and Biden has been strengthening security ties with Tokyo to counter China in the region, having hosted Prime Minister Fumio Kishida for a summit and state dinner in Washington last month.

There was no immediate reaction Thursday from Japan, which is largely on holiday this week.

Jeffrey Hall, a Japanese studies lecturer at Kanda University of International Studies in Chiba, Japan, said that this isn’t going to go over well.

“It will sound like America is once again talking down to the Japanese,” Hall said, “and that’s not really an effective way of getting Japan to fix various problems with its society that even Japanese people would agree are problems.”

Biden’s claims about the US economy are just as shocking.

McDonals is reporting what they are seeing is not good.

“It is clear that broad-based consumer pressures persist around the world,” CEO Chris Kempczinski said. “Consumers continue to be even more discriminating with every dollar that they spend as they faced elevated prices in their day-to-day spending.”

Additionally, Starbucks is reporting losses and has lowered its 2024 forecast.
