Texas state Rep. Nicole Collier literally joined a bathroom Zoom call with Gavin Newsom, Cory “Spartacus” Booker, and DNC chair Ken Martin to whine about redistricting — then bolted mid-sentence because someone told her it might be a felony to livestream party strategy sessions from the state Capitol restroom.
Yes, the Democrats are now reduced to toilet conference calls.
Collier tried to claim the Texas GOP’s redistricting plan “violates the Voting Rights Act” by “cracking and packing Black and Brown voters.” But the real spectacle wasn’t her talking points — it was the fact that she was sneaking around bathrooms like a teenager hiding from the hall monitor while her colleagues debated maps on the House floor.
The moment she bailed was comedy gold:
“Sorry, I have to leave. They said it’s a felony for me to do this. Apparently I can’t be on the floor or in the bathroom… Bye everybody. I’ve got to go.”
Cue the outrage theater. Booker immediately declared, “Rep. Collier in the bathroom has more dignity than Donald Trump in the Oval Office.” Newsom, of course, chimed in, “There you go.”
Spare us the melodrama. Collier wasn’t “silenced.” She wasn’t persecuted. She was trying to play politics on a bathroom Zoom call instead of doing her job. Texas leadership had already warned rogue Democrats they’d be tracked down if they tried another stunt like fleeing the state to block quorum, and this time, DPS officers were making sure they couldn’t sneak off.
Meanwhile, Newsom is so desperate to score partisan points that he immediately promised to redraw California’s maps to cancel out Texas’s — a move that would conveniently axe five GOP seats in Congress. This is what Democrats mean when they scream “protect democracy”: rig the system, stall legislatures, hide in bathrooms, and play the victim when called out.
The kicker? Despite all the drama, Texas Republicans passed their maps anyway. Collier’s bathroom protest accomplished nothing.
