If you thought Joe Biden’s presidency couldn’t deliver any more “jaw-droppers,” well, here comes another one. During his farewell week as president, Biden boldly declared that his administration had assembled “one of the most competent foreign policy teams in American history.”
Yes, you read that right. This claim was made alongside Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the same man who presided over one of the most humiliating U.S. foreign policy disasters in decades. The room probably would’ve burst into laughter if it weren’t for the seriousness of the international crises Biden’s administration has either caused, mishandled, or outright ignored.
Let’s take a stroll down memory lane, shall we? Start with the Afghanistan withdrawal in August 2021, a moment that will live in infamy. The rushed and disorganized pullout left Americans stranded, billions of dollars of military equipment abandoned to the Taliban, and Afghans who had supported the U.S. fearing for their lives. Not only did it humiliate the U.S. on the global stage, but it also reignited Islamic terrorism in the region. Apparently, the Taliban’s resurgence wasn’t a “test” Biden’s team managed to pass with flying colors.
And then there’s Russia. Vladimir Putin decided to roll the dice in February 2022 by invading Ukraine. Why? Perhaps because he didn’t see Biden as a formidable opponent. After all, Biden greenlit the Nord Stream 2 pipeline earlier in his presidency, giving Russia more financial leverage. When your foreign policy signals weakness, despots notice. The invasion of Ukraine came with horrific consequences, and while the U.S. has sent billions of dollars in aid to Kyiv, Biden’s hesitant leadership likely emboldened Putin in the first place.
But wait, there’s more! Under Biden, the U.S. has essentially been edged out of strategic regions in Africa where we were quietly keeping terrorism at bay. Russian-backed paramilitary groups like Wagner have filled the vacuum, tightening Moscow’s grip on the continent. So much for stability.
The debacles continued into 2023 with the Hamas attack on Israel in October. More than 1,200 Israelis were murdered in a single day, and hundreds were taken hostage by Iranian-backed terrorists. This horrifying attack ignited a regional war that now includes Iran directly firing ballistic missiles at Israel. What’s Biden’s strategy? A “strongly worded statement” and a few carrier groups stationed in the Mediterranean. How’s that working out?
And while all this chaos unfolded, communist China decided it was time to launch the largest cyberattack in history against the United States. The Biden administration’s response? Crickets. Not a single punishment for China, the same nation that also ramped up aggression toward Taiwan and continues to flood our markets with deadly fentanyl. It’s almost as if Biden’s foreign policy “team” skipped the chapter on deterrence.
Yet Biden claims, with a straight face, that his administration’s handling of these disasters has made America “stronger.” He even doubled down, saying, “Ending the war was the right thing to do, and I believe history will reflect that.” History? Sure, history will reflect something, but it won’t be kind. His presidency has left behind a world that’s less stable, more dangerous, and emboldened our adversaries.

If this is what “competence” looks like, one has to wonder what a “disaster” would entail. The bar for success in foreign policy has officially hit rock bottom.
