The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, has uncovered yet another multimillion-dollar boondoggle—this time in Georgia, where a coalition of nonprofits, including one tied to perennial political hopeful Stacey Abrams, was awarded a staggering $2 billion in federal funds despite having virtually no financial history. The discovery is part of a broader crackdown on Biden-era spending through the $27 billion Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF), an initiative that has already drawn scrutiny for parking $20 billion in various nonprofit accounts with little transparency or oversight.
One of the biggest beneficiaries of this questionable largesse was Power Forward Communities, a newly formed nonprofit coalition that, on paper, was dedicated to “decarbonizing and transforming American housing.” The coalition included groups like Habitat for Humanity and United Way, but the real power player in the mix? Rewiring America, a radical electrification advocacy group where Stacey Abrams serves as senior counsel.
Abrams, always quick to attach herself to a taxpayer-funded money pipeline, was “thrilled” to be part of the coalition, boasting in a social media post that the group would “expand access to clean energy” by prioritizing “housing, equity, and resilience.” What she failed to mention, however, was that Power Forward Communities was created in October 2023 solely to apply for the GGRF grant, and at the time of its application, had just $100 in reported funding.
Despite its complete lack of financial history, Power Forward Communities was somehow able to secure $2 billion in federal funds. Even more remarkably, the organization retained a major law firm to handle its filings, a luxury typically unavailable to newly minted nonprofits with no budget.
Abrams’ involvement doesn’t end with Rewiring America. Power Forward Communities’ list of partners reads like a who’s who of left-wing influence operations, many of which she has direct ties to:
- Southern Economic Advancement Project – A nonprofit Abrams founded after losing the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial race.
- Fair Count – Another Abrams-founded group, ostensibly focused on boosting census participation but widely accused of political activism.
- AFL-CIO & American Federation of Teachers (AFT) – Powerful Democratic-aligned labor unions that also partnered with Power Forward Communities. Notably, AFT President Randi Weingarten and Abrams both serve on the advisory board of Climate Power, a group that launched a $55 million ad campaign to boost Kamala Harris’s presidential run.
This isn’t Abrams’ first time at the taxpayer trough. The New Georgia Project—another nonprofit she founded—was just fined $300,000 by the Georgia Ethics Commission for illegally spending millions to boost Abrams’ 2018 campaign. The group, which was chaired by Sen. Raphael Warnock for more than two years, failed to disclose $4.2 million in donations and $3.2 million in expenditures, a serious violation of state law.
Even after years of dodging subpoenas and fighting ethics investigations in court, Abrams’ network is still siphoning off federal money—only this time, it’s under the guise of climate justice.
The Power Forward Communities debacle is just one example of the staggering sums DOGE has uncovered in shady nonprofit grants. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin recently revealed that DOGE had found $20 billion sitting idle in various nonprofit accounts linked to the GGRF. That’s $20 billion in taxpayer money parked with political allies under the guise of “climate action” with little accountability or oversight.
The sheer scale of this operation raises serious questions about how the Biden administration distributed funds and whether the GGRF was designed as little more than a slush fund for progressive activists.
