New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani created a new office on Jan. 2 called the Office of Mass Engagement. The goal is to help New Yorkers organize and develop leaders who stay influential long after this administration is over. Tascha Van Auken, who led his campaign, now runs the office. She spoke about this vision at the Urban 20 summit in New York City.
Van Auken said the method is simple: an organized tenant is a protected tenant. She believes knowledge makes people confident enough to talk to their neighbors. According to her, speaking with neighbors reveals that your issue is not just your own.
According to Fox News, critics say this is not about helping people but building political power. Vickie Palladino, a NYC councilwoman, wrote on X that socialists focus on organizing but not making things better for people. She stated the sole strategy involves gaining enough power so no one can halt them when conditions deteriorate.
The reaction was quick and harsh. John D. Macari Jr., a retired NYPD cop, called it Mamdani’s Ministry of Truth & Propaganda. One user on social media said the office is actually the Office of the Permanent Communist revolution. Another user wrote that NYC is done and that she grew up there and knows it is finished.
Mamdani set up the office by Executive Order No. 7. His campaign used over 100,000 volunteers to knock on more than 3 million doors. Van Auken was the one who spearheaded that field operation. Now she is applying those same tactics to city government. The criticism suggests this is a permanent shift in how the city works.
This is not the only fight the mayor is facing. He invited himself to the Columbus Day Parade on Oct. 12, which caused anger among Italian-American leaders. Mike Crispi, president of the Italian American Civil Rights League, called the move weak and feckless. He said Mamdani has shown contempt for their people.
Crispi referenced a 2020 post where Mamdani gave the middle finger to a statue of Columbus. The mayor also updated a city map that left out Little Italy. Councilwoman Joann Ariola asked why he would want to be there to pretend he is a paisan. She said he should sit this one out.
Mayor Mamdani also told reporters he welcomes all media to a meeting with President Trump. Trump had banned some outlets from the White House. Mamdani said he believes in letting everyone engage. Trump then defended his ban, calling CNN fake news. He said those outlets are very bad for national security.
It is unclear if Mamdani has accepted the parade invite yet. The Columbus Day parade is set for Manhattan on Monday, Oct. 12. The new office will likely keep working to build its network regardless of the noise. Per Fox News, Van Auken noted that an organized tenant is a protected tenant, which constitutes the entire method.
